In The Beginning God Created The Heavens and The Earth
And then there was blogging.
I am going to begin our journey together and talk about the underlying technology and development platform that I recommend. This site is built using a tool called Wordpress.
Wordpress is an open source software originally designed for blogging, but so powerful and so popular that it is being used commercially as the chosen website development platform for many businesses. WordPress is actually a blog publishing system written in PHP and backed by a MySQL database. It turns out that Wordpress is a full blown content management system (CMS), frequently used for storing, controlling, and publishing, documentation such as news articles, operators’ manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, video, audio, marketing brochures, and web content.
Now that you know what the chosen website publishing tool is, what is the next step?
In order to use Wordpress, you must have already established a relationship with a website hosting service (I recommend Bluehost.com or Hostgator.com), have purchased a domain name, and installed Wordpress at the server in an appropriate folder. The installation process can be greatly simplified by using a hosting service that has C-Panel integrated and gives you access to Fantastico or Simple Scripts. Stick with my recommendations, and you will not have to worry about manually configuring your Wordpress and database installation.

So you know how to install Wordpress, but what is the big deal? What is all of this “blogging” about, and is it better than building a more traditional “static” site that does not incorporate a content management system?
